Living and creative working under one roof!

Creative or artistically active students need special rooms to study and work successfully. The studierendenWERK BERLIN has developed a housing concept that is completely tailored to their needs. Living and working in the Wohnatelier Gelfertstraße is a successful symbiosis. Creative students are to inspire each other by working together, make contacts and get a glimpse of other artistic techniques, methods and disciplines.

The studio is located in " Haus 1 " of the Gelfertstraße dormitory complex. The dormitory was built between 1961 and 1964 and consists of 4 houses with a total of 94 beds, of which 18 are in the studio.

In the heart of the house lies the large shared studio space of around 130 square metres.

Every resident* in the residential studio has their own workplace there. Many creative people especially love community life. In the 3 to 6 share flats, the residents* can be inspired again and again by the work of their flatmates*.

Those who prefer a quieter atmosphere can move into a single apartment. A total of 5 apartments are available. A barrier-free room is also available.

Generous living space outside the rooms and maisonettes, such as the kitchen and dining area, ensure that the Gelfertstraße studio apartment looks like a large communally inhabited house in which everyone nevertheless has private retreat rooms.

Practical information about the Wohnatelier

The Location

The residential studio is part of the large residential complex at Gelfertstraße 45.

The next underground station is "Freie Universität" on U3. With the underground you can get to Charlottenburg, Schöneberg, Kreuzberg and Friedrichshain quickly and without changing trains. The cultural hubs in Berlin's west and centre are quick and easy to reach.

The immediate surroundings are very green and quiet. In summer you can reach the Krumme Lanke or the Schlachtensee in a few minutes by bike.

The types of housing

The Wohnatelier offers different room and living forms: Single rooms in 3-person, 4-person and 6-person shared flats of approx. 10 to 17m2, as well as small maisonettes of almost 30m2 and private bathrooms. The maisonettes are up to 5 meters high and some have large studio windows with northern lights. All rooms are furnished, have generous window areas and look into the greenery.

The Atelier and the shared living space

The building has a total area of about 750 m2, of which about 130 m2 are used as studio space. It has a large communal kitchen and spacious dining areas and direct access to the gardens. The shared apartments have common bathrooms.

The shared studio forms the heart of the building. It has large windows to the garden, a room height of 4 meters. It is equipped with water and electricity connections, as well as work surfaces. With the exception of certain materials and techniques (e.g. highly flammable materials, odour-intensive materials, noise-generating techniques, etc.), the studio spaces can be used freely. The coexistence is regulated by a studio order. In the outside area further areas are designated for working.

Rent and rental period

Depending on the size of the living space there are different rents from 552 Euro to 692 Euro (maisonettes) per month. In this amount the rent, the costs for water (hot and cold), electricity, heating and fast internet are already included. All residents* can use the studio space and common living space.

The contracts are signed for a period of one year and may be renewed as long as the right to housing exists in accordance with the guidelines for the allocation of dwellings. The entitlement to housing is 5 years and can be extended by a maximum of 2 years.
