The dormitory is named after Ottilie von Hansemann (* April 11, 1840 in Koblenz; † December 12, 1919 in Berlin). She was a German women's rights activist who was a champion for the enrollment of women to study. The Ottilie von Hansemann Foundation has given the dormitory to the studierendenWERK for its use. According to the foundation's guidelines, the apartments may only be rented to female students who are eligible to live there. Male students may only move in if they are partners of the female tenants and eligible to live there.
