Ballroom Session
Be there in the audience and support the participants!
Ballroom culture is a vibrant subculture that originated in Harlem, New York in the 1960s and 70s. Originally created by Black and Latin American trans women, also known as ‘Fem Queens’, it provides a space for self-expression and art for these and other members of the LGBTQIA+ communities within a competitive framework.
Various categories, such as Realness, Face, Runway, Sex Siren, Body, Fashion Killer or the Performance Categories (Old Way, New Way, Vogue Fem) are the means of expression, language and statement of the ballroom community. Regardless of style, voguing shows the courage of the Black and Latino LGBTQIA+ communities to create an art form that goes beyond creative expression. Ballroom culture provides a sense of identity, belonging and dignity in a world that does not fully value their existence.
The Ballroom course at studierendenWERK BERLIN is about getting to know the Ballroom culture and its history. Participants also learn the different categories as a means of expression for personal development and as part of a community. You will see the result of the semester at the Practice Ball, where the participants and members of the community come together to compete against each other.
