5. How do I have to take out health insurance during my studies?

Students with disabilities should carefully consider their choice of health insurance so that they are guaranteed good health care during their studies.

If you were already covered by your parents' statutory health insurance (GKV) as a student, you can retain this status during your studies until the age of 25. If you are not eligible for family insurance because you are older than 25 or your income is too high, student health insurance is an option.

For students with disabilities, it is possible to apply for an extension of family insurance and student insurance under certain conditions.

Students who cannot apply for an extension of their student insurance can apply for "voluntary insurance" with the statutory health insurance scheme once they reach the age of 30.

As a rule, the same conditions apply to international students as to German students. International students also have the option of choosing between statutory and private student insurance

Note

It is worth comparing the offers of health insurance companies and checking which tariff really covers your health needs.
Particularly when considering choosing private insurance, it should be noted that not every tariff covers all necessary benefits and that you may have to bear any additional costs due to disability yourself. It is not possible to switch to statutory health insurance at a later date during the course of your studies.
